Deputy and teens Being a teenager can be difficult. Good kids eager to grow up sometimes fall in with the wrong crowd, are confronted with situations they don’t know how to handle, or end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Being a parent to a teenager can be equally as challenging.  Many parents wonder whether their son or daughter may be challenged with issues like unsafe driving habits, drug use, or unsafe Internet use, or are unaware of the significance these issues have in their teens lives.  Both teens and parents can find answers to important questions at the community forum “Is Your Teen at Risk?” The forum addresses current issues facing our teens and provides information so that parents are able to make informed decisions and address concerns they should have about their teens.

Resource Table Photo The Is Your Teen at Risk program is an ongoing collaborative effort between the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Orange County Fire Authority, California Highway Patrol, the Capistrano Unified School District, PTSA and others who serve our youth and are working together to educate the community on keeping our teens safe.  The program was started in 2007 to meet the need of educating parents in Orange County and is provided free by the partners to the community.

The Is Your Teen at Risk website is hosted by the Orange County Sheriff's Department.  The format of the Is Your Teen at Risk program varies between a panel of speakers who address concerns specific to the community, to a "workshop" format where different topics are presented individually.  Current street drug trends, substance abuse, teen driving, Internet safety,  and school violence prevention are among discussion topics.  This is not designed to be a "scared straight" kind of event.  We hope to create a dialogue that fosters open communication between parents and their teens on topics that are often difficult, but necessary to discuss. Throughout the program, parents will have the opportunity to visit several resource booths and talk with professionals firsthand. Resource providers include agencies working in the field of health care, education, social services, law enforcement, and prevention/intervention programs to name a few.

Don't miss this free opportunity to become more informed.  Upcoming programs and registration for the events are offered through this website.  Registration information is used to provide adequate services at each event and does not require a fee.  The Is Your Teen at Risk program is offered several times each year around Orange County.  For more information about the program please contact the Sheriff’s Department Community Programs Division, Lt. Stacey Taylor at 714-647-4129.
